September 2017 Saturday Seminar

Topic: Emotional and Social Competencies in the Workplace

(If you are planning to register please see the "Special Note" below).

Core content (2 hours):

60 minutes: Lecture on emotional intelligence and it’s importance from a PM context. Present data and tie it in to discipline.

30 minutes: Discussion of emotional intelligence assessments, hand out personal feedback reports (note all participants would need to complete an online assessment beforehand – see Special Notes section below for details).

30 minutes: Guided discussion of four main pillars of emotional intelligence (self-awareness, interpersonal skills, change tolerance and stress management) - share stories, encourage small group and cross-table feedback.

Exercises (1.5 hours):

45 minutes: Reflective listening - combination lecture and practice - vital to negotiation skills

45 minutes: Invalidation - this refers to negotiation-killing language we often use (unconsciously) to dismiss people’s ideas.

Assertiveness techniques - this refers to communication methods that help you stand your ground while neither alienating nor giving too much power to your partner.

Special Note:
Participants will be asked to complete an online assessment prior to the Saturday session. Geoff will be compiling this information and bringing printed reports that will be used in the first half of the session. This online assessment is to be completed by Tuesday, September 26th at 5:00 p.m. to allow Geoff time to process and print the reports. An email containing the online assessment link will be sent out Friday, September 15th and a reminder email will be sent to all registered attendees on Friday, September 22nd to complete the online assessment.
Attendees registered after that time or that do not complete the online assessment will be given an opportunity to complete the online assessment after the Saturday session and the results will be sent by email for their review.

Presenter: Geoff Crane

I was a project/program manager for over 20 years. I was good at it. But years ago my boss said to me, "Geoff, you know how some PMs are amazing at business and some have this crazy technical savvy and how others are extremely organized? Yeah. You don’t have any of those things”. After pausing for dramatic effect, he went on, “but you get people to work together like nobody’s business". Over the years my leadership skills helped me deliver a lot of successful projects...but I could never quite articulate what I was doing that made things “work better”.

So I went back to school.

Now I’m a scientist in Trent University’s Emotion and Health Research Laboratory where I study human emotion. Combined with my extensive background in project delivery and execution I have begun helping people find and develop the leader within. Through public speaking, workshops and one-on-one coaching, I've helped many project professionals learn:

-how to listen reflectively for better negotiations
-how to read facial cues and interpret body language
-how to catch dangerous thinking traps and stay objective
-how to set and maintain boundaries without alienating stakeholders
-how to harness stress and keep a cool head when things get crazy

I used to like my work - but now I love it. It would be my privilege to teach you what I know.
