PMI OVOC Banner Updated-1

The road to success in project management goes well beyond the Gantt chart. People, Process, Product and Presence represent the 4 P’s of success in project management. The 2014 PMI OVOC conference will provide project and program management professionals, stakeholders, PMO offices, researchers and students industry leading coverage on in depth topics covering the 4 P’s of project success.

Gantt chart invention credit goes to Mr. Henry Gantt, the American mechanical engineer who popularized the concept in 1915. However the first known Gantt charts were developed in 1886 by Karol Adamiecki as Harmonograms. A fitting word as harmony in project management requires Gantt, but goes well beyond Gantt.

The first P is people and without good people projects cannot have success. These people need to be engaged, skilled, and motivated and working towards a common goal. The best people alone do not mean projects are successful. Process is the second P of success and great process should be optimized and mitigate risk. Having the best processes even with the best people does not guarantee success. The third P is product and this involves not only creating great products but creating relevant products. Even with fantastic people, best in class processes and world leading products success also requires products being noticed. Presence is the 4th P of success.

Whether conceiving, initiating, planning or executing projects the four Ps of success should all be considered critical. Topics in this year’s conference take projects beyond Gantt, and focus on the four P’s of success.
