Earned Value Management for Application Development

The concept of earned value has existed in the project management profession for decades, however those managing projects that deliver software or IT systems (application development projects) have continued to face challenges in realizing the benefits of earned value management (EVM). This may partly be attributed to the fact that EVM evolved out of monitoring the performance of projects delivering physical outputs (bridges, buildings, ships, etc.) as opposed to virtual outputs (software, configuration, business rules, etc.). Adding to the challenge is the seismic shift underway in the application development space as agile methodologies such as Kanban and Scrum gain popularity. This presentation will examine the opportunities and limits of employing EVM to monitor the performance of application development projects, as well as examining techniques to ensure application development project managers can get the most from EVM.

•         The History and Evolution of EVM for Application Development
•         The Strengths and Limitations of EVM for Application Development
•         Using EVM in a Waterfall environment
•         Using EVM in an Agile environment

Presenter:    Jay Payette

Jay Payette, PMP is the managing principal of Payette Consulting, a boutique management consulting firm that focuses on design thinking and project management. Prior to founding Payette Consulting, he worked in the Canadian consulting practice of Accenture. Jay has managed projects for a number of different organizations over the years including Fortune 500 companies and public sector organizations, and has presented at several conferences including SUMMIT, BA*World, and the PMI Global Congress.
